Who is The Huddersfield War Memorial Trust Fund?

We are a small Yorkshire grant-making trust, charity number 220016, constituted by Declaration of Trust on 9 May 1922 and amended once by resolution dated 15 April 1957. We care for the Cenotaph in Greenhead Park and make small grants in the Huddersfield area.

What are your charitable objects?

To support Huddersfield Royal Infirmary; to maintain and repair the War Memorial in Greenhead Park; to assist in the education, maintenance and benefit of persons in necessitous circumstances; and to support convalescent homes or institutions caring for the sick, poor and needy within a 20-mile radius of Huddersfield Town Hall. These are the words of our Declaration of Trust, unchanged since 1957.

What is your area of benefit?

The Charity Commission record describes our area of benefit as ‘Huddersfield or its vicinity’. For Convalescent Awards specifically, our deed requires the recipient organisation to be within twenty miles of Huddersfield Town Hall.

How can I apply for a hardship grant?

Through one of our trusted referral partners — typically the Royal British Legion (Huddersfield Branch), SSAFA West Yorkshire, Combat Stress, the Welcome Centre, or a Kirklees social worker. The relevant application forms are on our Resources page. If you are unsure which partner to approach, write to us and we will suggest one.

How quickly will I hear back about a grant application?

For Listening Fund applications we aim to reply within seven days. For Necessity Grants we usually reply within ten working days. For Convalescent Awards the cycle is annual: applications close at the end of March and decisions are communicated in May.

How much can I apply for?

Listening Fund grants are typically £100–£500, with a maximum of £750. Necessity Grants are typically £100–£400. Convalescent Awards are agreed annually and are typically £750–£2,500 per partner organisation.

Who are your trustees?

Ten unpaid trustees, all local to Huddersfield or its vicinity: Stephen Michael Armitage (Chair), Amanda Mohr, Rev Dr Paul T Wilcock BEM, Jim Dodds, Philip Crowther, Ian Fillan, Stephen Haywood, Susan Pamela Thomis, Kalvinder Bhullar and Elisabeth Sally Louise Greenwood.

How often do the trustees meet?

Four times a year, usually in February, May, August and November. We meet at Holmfirth Civic Hall or a similar hired local venue. Smaller hardship grants from the Listening Fund can be approved between meetings by the Chair and one further trustee.

How is the trust funded?

From investment income on a small permanent endowment built up over a century, supplemented by donations and legacies from Huddersfield residents and partner organisations. Our total income in the year to 31 December 2024 was £36,423.

Can I leave a gift in my will?

Yes. Please consult your solicitor and use our registered charity number 220016 in the wording. We are happy to suggest a form of words if you write to us at [email protected].

Are you part of the Royal British Legion?

No. We are an independent charity. The Royal British Legion (Huddersfield Branch) is one of our closest referral partners, and we share Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph each year, but we are governed entirely separately.

Do you fund organisations as well as individuals?

Yes — our Convalescent Awards and Royal Infirmary Award go to organisations rather than individuals. We do not, however, make general open grants to charities outside our charitable objects.

Are you on social media?

We maintain small Facebook, Instagram, X and LinkedIn presences mainly for community announcements. We are not a high-volume publisher. Our primary channels are this website and the quarterly dispatch.

How do I make a complaint?

Please write to the Chair at our registered office address, marked ‘Private and confidential — complaint’. We will acknowledge within five working days and respond formally within thirty days. You also have the right to complain about us to the Charity Commission via their public register.

Still have a question?

We’d rather be asked than not.
