The service

What to expect.

The civic procession assembles outside the Town Hall on Ramsden Street at 10.15 and processes to the Memorial in Greenhead Park, arriving by 10.45. The service begins shortly after the procession is in place. The order is largely unchanged year to year: opening words from the Vicar of Huddersfield, the Exhortation, the Last Post (sounded at 11.00 sharp), two minutes’ silence, the Reveille, the laying of wreaths in civic order, a short dedication, and the National Anthem. The Hymn ‘O God, Our Help in Ages Past’ will be sung.

The service is led by Rev Dr Paul T Wilcock BEM, trustee of this fund. The Last Post will be sounded by Mr Robert Sutcliffe of Honley, as it has been since 1997. The standard-bearers are provided by the Royal British Legion (Huddersfield Branch). Music is provided, weather permitting, by the brass section of the Slaithwaite Philharmonic Band.

What to bring

  • Warm and waterproof clothing. The service takes place outdoors regardless of weather.
  • A small folding chair if standing for an hour will be difficult. There are no fixed seats in the park, but a reserved seating area is provided for those who request it in advance.
  • Poppy wreaths from civic and community organisations are welcomed. Please email us if you would like to be added to the wreath-laying list.

Accessibility

  • The path from the Park Drive entrance to the Cenotaph is largely flat and paved, suitable for wheelchairs and walking aids.
  • A reserved seating area for older or less mobile attendees is provided to the north of the Memorial. Please ask any of our hi-vis stewards on the morning.
  • A British Sign Language interpreter will be present from 10.45 for the spoken parts of the service.
  • An accessible toilet is available in the park’s café building, a short walk from the Memorial.
  • Parking: please use the Park Drive car park (HD1 4HS), arriving by 10.15 to allow time. Disabled parking bays are available.

Afterwards

After the dispersal of the procession, the Friends of Greenhead Park serve tea from a small refreshment table inside the bandstand. There is no charge. Please feel welcome to come in for a warm drink, particularly if you have come on your own. We will sit with anyone who would like company.
